What is SAP? A Plain-English Guide to SAP Software and Solutions

What SAP does, and why it exists
SAP was founded in Walldorf, Germany, in 1972 by five former IBM engineers. The name stands for Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte, “Systems, Applications and Products”, reflecting the original German name, Systemanalyse Programmentwicklung. The founding idea was simple: businesses running different departments on different systems end up with the same information stored multiple times, in multiple formats, with no reliable way to see the full picture. SAP built software to unify that, a single system where finance, procurement, manufacturing, and HR all work from the same, real-time data.

SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA
SAP ECC (ERP Central Component) is SAP’s previous-generation ERP suite, and it’s still what a large number of established businesses run today. SAP S/4HANA is its successor, a next-generation ERP suite built on SAP’s in-memory HANA database, with a simplified data model, real-time reporting, and a modern interface (SAP Fiori) in place of ECC’s older, more batch-driven approach. SAP SuccessFactors
SuccessFactors is SAP’s cloud human capital management (HCM) suite, covering recruiting, onboarding, performance management, learning, and payroll. It’s typically run alongside a core ERP system rather than replacing one.
SAP Ariba
Ariba is SAP’s procurement and spend management platform, built around a business network that connects buyers and suppliers, used for everything from sourcing and contract management to supplier collaboration and invoicing.

The 2027 deadline: why SAP ECC’s end of mainstream maintenance matters
SAP has set an end date for mainstream maintenance of ECC: 31 December 2027. After that, businesses still running ECC either need to have moved to S/4HANA, or pay for optional extended maintenance, available at additional cost through 2030. With mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC ending in 2027, tens of thousands of organisations are planning or executing migrations to SAP S/4HANA, and the deadline is the single biggest reason SAP migration has become such an urgent topic across the SAP customer base.
This isn’t only a technical deadline. Losing mainstream support means losing regular security patches and legal/compliance updates on a system many businesses depend on for financial reporting and operational control, a real risk for any regulated industry. It’s also, in practice, a forcing function: businesses that treat 2027 as a hard deadline tend to plan properly, while those that leave it late tend to rush the parts of a migration that matter most, particularly getting their underlying data ready. How SAP is evolving with AI: SAP Business AI and Joule
SAP’s current direction is built around what it calls Business AI, embedding AI directly into its core applications rather than treating it as a bolt-on. The most visible part of that is Joule, SAP’s AI copilot, which sits across the SAP portfolio and lets users ask questions in natural language and get answers drawn from their own business data rather than generic web knowledge.
In practice, Joule shows up in a few recognisable ways: streamlining HR self-service tasks like time-off requests and approvals, speeding up developer work with AI-assisted coding and testing, and surfacing insights across sales, finance, procurement, and other business operations without users needing to run a report first. SAP’s pitch is that this is generative AI with enterprise context and governance built in, rather than a general-purpose chatbot bolted onto old software.
