A Quick overview of LEGO SERIOUS PLAY

LEGO SERIOUS PLAY is a revolutionary methodology that goes beyond conventional problem-solving approaches. Before we dive into what it can do for you, your colleagues and your business, here's a quick overview of its origins, the science, the profound impact it can have on fostering creativity within teams and why we use it for SAP UX Design.

What Is It

LSP is a method where participants use LEGO bricks to express ideas, solve problems, and communicate more effectively in teams. It turns abstract concepts into tangible models, making discussions more engaging and insightful.

The Purpose

The purpose of LSP is to boost creativity, communication, and collaboration. By building and sharing LEGO models, teams uncover deeper insights and generate innovative solutions.

The History

LEGO® Serious Play was inspired by the core principles of LEGO bricks and the LEGO system. In search of a way to drive innovation, the LEGO Group realised that the answer might lie within their own product. Just as LEGO bricks help children build their dreams, they could also help adults build their visions for future strategies.

The concept emerged in 1996 when two IMD professors in Switzerland and LEGO Group owner Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen were exploring new strategic planning tools. They recognised the potential of using LEGO elements to create three-dimensional models of business challenges. This led to the development of the LEGO Serious Play methodology.

The Science

LSP was founded on the belief that humans naturally imagine and make sense of situations through creativity. It emphasises using hands-on creativity to develop new and improved solutions. Research by LEGO indicates that learning through hands generates a different emotional response than merely thinking, which is valuable for creating effective problem solvers and innovative organisations.

The methodology incorporates ideas like Constructivism, constructionism, storytelling, and metaphors to help the brain process and understand situations more deeply, leading to better solutions.

The Rules

Everyone Builds: All participants, regardless of role, must actively engage in building, fostering team collaboration and creativity.

You Own Your Model: Each participant is responsible for their creation, sharing the story and meaning behind it, while others can inquire about, but not challenge, the model's personal significance.

All Discussions Focus on the Model: Conversations should center on the model itself, using it as a metaphor for deeper issues, ensuring a safe and productive environment for all.

The Steps

What Are the Steps in Lego Serious Play?

LEGO Serious Play (LSP) follows a structured sequence of steps to facilitate collaborative problem-solving and decision-making. While the process can be tailored to specific client needs, the key steps generally include:

1) Foundation

Participants are introduced to the LSP methodology and engage in warm-up exercises to build basic skills with LEGO bricks. This step sets the stage by demonstrating how playful interactions can create complex adaptive systems, showcasing the method’s versatility.

2) Content

CONTENT
Participants build individual LEGO models to represent their ideas or solutions related to a given challenge. These individual models are then combined into shared models, reflecting the group’s collective understanding and approach to the content.

3) Landscape

Shared models are placed on a common landscape, creating a visual representation of the system. Participants add internal and external agents (such as stakeholders or forces) and strategically place them on the landscape to illustrate relationships and dynamics.

4) System

Connections are built between agents and between shared models and agents, highlighting the interactions and interdependencies within the system. This step reveals the complexity and interconnectedness of the elements within the system.

5) Test System

Participants explore the system by identifying and playing out emergent scenarios, using strategic imagination to anticipate potential outcomes. This step helps to uncover new insights and possible challenges within the system.

6) Simple Guiding Principles

The group develops, selects, and tests simple guiding principles that can guide decision-making within the system. These principles are validated against the system to ensure they are effective and relevant.

X) Planning

Key conclusions are drawn from the process, and participants develop concrete plans or strategies to implement the insights gained. This additional step ensures that the outcomes of the LSP process are actionable in real-world contexts.
